India is currently facing a huge problem of unemployment, which is a cause for great concern. The scenario looks bleak for many freshers and graduates, especially in the corporate IT industry where the competition is cut-throat. A recent article published by Times of India spoke about the research and analysis undertaken by the All India Council for Technical Education. The reports of the research said that about 800,000 engineers graduate annually across India, out of which more than 60 percent are unemployed. The report also stated that a mere 1 percent of students actually complete their internships effectively. This lack of hands-on approach and practical knowledge could well be the primary reason behind this growing unemployment.
The skill gap is a result of an inconsistent and unstable education system. There is a big gap between what is taught theoretically in colleges and what is actually implemented at the job level. Hundreds of thousands of student graduate every year but when it comes to getting a good IT job, they fall short of knowledge and corporate readiness. There is a simple reason behind this. The industries and businesses change constantly and regularly with the advent of new technology everyday, whereas the curriculum and courses taught at academic institutions are not updated for long periods of time. There is constant evolution and innovation in the IT industry resulting in a plethora of new technologies. With such constant growth, it is not easy to survive in the field with limited skills and knowledge. Therefore it is necessary to continuously keep upgrading one’s skill sets as per the IT market. Modern and capable IT employees not only specialize in a particular subject but also show willingness to adapt and improve. Thus, although college education strengthens a student’s foundation, he lacks the industry exposure and corporate readiness, making it hard for him to find a suitable employment.
HCL’s Program in Lucknow and Madurai
In order to minimize this issue of graduate unemployment, HCL has started a new unique initiative called Training and Hiring Program. It is a training-cum-employment program that aims to ameliorate the employment rate by up-skilling fresh graduates and engineers. This program acts as a bridge between talented individuals and the jobs lying vacant due to dearth of suitable candidates and provides them with a career launch pad. Assured jobs are given to those who successfully complete the 6-month training course. The Training and Hiring Program is currently operational in two Indian cities – Lucknow and Madurai
